THE FALL AND RISE OF REGINALD PERRIN

A famous TV series from the mid-eighties of Perrin as sales manager for Sunshine Desserts. A brilliant script and Leonard Rossiter make this comedy well worth seeing.

 

THE FALLEN IDOL

A beautiful film by Carol Reed from a short story by Graham Greene about the young son of an ambassador who mistakenly believes that the butler has committed a crime. Winner of many awards.

 

THE FALL OF THE ROMANOV DYNASTY

This documentary was made by Esfir Shub in 1927 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. Revised and given a soundtrack in 1967. Of course does not tell the complete story.

 

FAMILY LIFE

A powerful story of the treatment of a teenage girl whose mildly irrational behavior turns into schizophrenia, mainly as a result of conventional treatment of her condition. Made in 1971 by Ken Loach.

 

FANNY and ALEXANDER

Double cassette video running 5 hours. The theatrical Ekdahl family live in a provincial Swedish city in 1907. The father dies and the puritanical local bishop charms the widow to go and live in his Bishop's palace. The mother in law becomes concerned for the children. A film of grace and elegance by Ingmar Bergman. EST with Swedish dialogue.

A remake of the 1944 original but in general pretty good. Raymond Chandler's crime thriller.

The romantic novel by Thomas Hardy set in Dorset. A fine cast of Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Peter Finch and Terrance Stamp tell the love story of a girl who makes the wrong choice.

The original version(1932) with Gary Cooper of Hemingway's novel about a wounded World War 1 American ambulance driver falling in love with his nurse. Dir. Frank Borzage.

By award winning director Ken Loach. An East German is forced to go to the West because of anti-state activities. There he finds life is also corrupt but differently, also learns the truth about his father.

A compelling complex and thought-provoking portrait of Robert McNamara, U.S. Secretary of Defence in the 1960s during the Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam war that reveals some of the reasoning behind many contentious official policies.

Have an evening of 1931 horror! In a prologue, the producer comes on stage and warns any of the audience with heart problems to immediately leave the cinema!

 

FREEDOM ROAD

Little-known film starring Muhammad Ali & Kris Kristofferson. Story of racial tensions in the deep South at end of American Civil War.

 

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

Thin story of New York cops tracking down heroin smugglers made watchable by Gene Hackman as the obsessive and brutish cop.

 

THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN

A great success in the cinema. A society man jilts his fiancée for the deserted mistress of a French sailor. Meryl Steep.

 

FRENZY

Thriller of RAF officer under suspicion for series of murders. A not very good example of Hitchcock but included to complete our collection.

 

FRITZ THE CAT

Animation. Ralph Bakshi's tale of a raunchy New York tom cat. Wicked comment on radical-hippy lifestyles. Examines the effect of the alternative culture on Fritz. Fritz goes to Harlem to examine LIFE!

 

FROM HERE TO ETERNITY

Winner of 8 Academy Awards in 1953. Sexual and other frustrations of servicemen in Honolulu barracks at time of Pearl Harbour.

 

FROM THE LIFE OF THE MARIONETTES

Little known Ingmar Bergman film. Businessman murders a prostitute. His psychiatrist tells what happens in the weeks before the crime. English Dubbed, but not too badly.

 

THE FULL MONTY

Dir. Peter Cattaneo  1997.  88 minutes.  Combines black humour, roaring hilarity and all the absurdity, heartache and pathos of six unemployed Sheffield steelworkers trying to keep body, soul and dignity together. Well, just about!  One of them convinces the rest that a strip routine can bring in the lolly. A most successful British comedy  with a good sound track of hits by Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones.
