KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS

Althogh an Ealing Comedy, this is almost more French than English. Alec Guinness takes 9 parts as he gets rid of, one by one, the relatives who stand in the way of a fortune. Marvellous humour.

 

A KIND OF LOVING

From the novel by Stan Barstow. Simple in outline, bursts with telling detail of the battle young people had in those days (1960) against cramping suburban ideas of love and class. North of England tale.

 

KING AND COUNTRY

Dir. Joseph Losey. Amidst the mud and blood of Passcendaele in 1917, a private awaits Court Martial for desertion. Regarded by many as one of the best half dozen war films.

 

KINGS OF THE ROAD

Wim Wenders film of a man who abandons everything and then meets cinema repair man with whom he travels the length of the then East/West German Border, haunted by their pasts. German dialogue-EST.

 Germany 1932  68 mins.  Dir: Slatan Dudow    Screenplay Bertold Brecht. A family is evicted from their home and sent to a camp for the dispossessed. Its subversive humour and energetic communist message meant that one year after its release it was banned by the Nazis on their accession to power. KUHLE WAMPE is followed by a video essay by Andrew Hoellering, son of the producer Georg Hoellering (who afterfleeing from the Nazis ran the Academy Cinema in London, showcase for many famous foreign language films?). Analyses Kuhle Wampe and tells of the background to its production.
