L’ECLISSE. 

Dir. Michelangelo Antonioni. Italy 1962. B & W.  124 mins.  The final part of Antonioni’s trilogy about broken society and ruptured relationships. Monica Vitti stars as a young Roman woman emerging from a stifling affair with Ricardo, an aloof intellectual and meets Pierre (Alain Delon), an arrogant young stockbroker.  Cannes Special Jury Prize.  Leslie Halliwell said “   abandons narrative in favour of vague incident and relentless character study.”   Warning!  Not very good picture quality.

 (H) GB/Spain. 1995  109 mins  Ken Loach’s film charts the experiences of an unemployed worker from Liverpool who goes to fight against Franco in Spain. At first he finds things are simple and it seems a straightforward clash between good and evil but then things get more complex and divided loyalties mirror the in-fighting that plagued the Left and led to Franco’s victory.

 

 

LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD

Alain Resnais dreamlike film of an elegant woman in a triangular relationship. What is fact and what dream is never clear. Set in the elegance of Mariinsky Lazne a spa in Czech Republic. French-EST.
