OF HUMAN BONDAGE

.  Dir. John Cromwell. USA 1934  83 mins. B & W.  Set in London in the 1920s, Leslie Howard is a disabled man who falls for a tarty cockney waitress (Bette Davis). For years he struggles to escape her hold on him. From the story by Somerset Maughan. This was the first major role for Davis and she was rightly heralded as a star of the first order.

 

THE OFFICERS' WARD

   France 2001.  126 mins.  English Subtitles.   A moving account of men, mutilated by war, together as a community, and their tentative attempts to come to terms with their injuries and the outside world’s reactions to them. Had this starred Gerard  Depardieu it would probably have been an international hit, but as the star-free work of an unknown director it’s more of a neglected near-masterpiece.  Official Selection for Cannes Film Festival 2001  Dir.
